Love fulfills the law

The second reading from yesterday’s Mass was about the fulfillment of the law–meaning, God’s commandments. I always thought that fulfilling the law is all about following every single commandment given by God. This, of course, is very true. But there’s actually an even much simpler approach to achieving this goal. And it can only be done through love! Romans 13:8-10 says:

Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another;
for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery;
you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet, ”
and whatever other commandment there may be,
are summed up in this saying, namely,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no evil to the neighbor;
hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

So, clearly, to fulfill all God’s commandments, all we need to do is love our neighbors as ourselves! As easy as it sounds, it doesn’t seem that way all the time. Wars and conflicts around us show that people do not really love their neighbors enough to avoid bloodshed and choose to live in peace instead! If indeed we love ourselves and yet hate our neighbors, then we’re not fulfilling the law! Why? Because I believe that love and hate can never coexist together! One either truly loves, or hates another. We do not really love ourselves if we hate our neighbors. And we can not give love if we do not have love! If this is the case, then we can never love anyone and we will be consumed by hate!

While hatred is a very strong emotion capable of starting wars and killing people, I do not think it is the opposite of love. Love is the ultimate virtue! And there is not one single emotion in the opposite end that rivals or equals it, however wicked it may be! Love overcomes all iniquities– pride, hatred, indifference, apathy, fear, you name it! And even if all the sins and evil in this world were lumped up together, they still would not balance out love. It just won’t happen– ever! Why? Because love conquers all! Love is the only thing that lasts! Love is the fulfillment of the law!

  1. kuya boychie, we should really get into the t-shirt business! your “war is uselss” painting would look great on a shirt!

    remember when we had the idea to do “beaded design” t-shirts? meron na ngayon….

  2. Hi, Lynchie! Thanks for visiting again!
    No, I haven’t forgotten about that t-shirt business idea. One of these days, I’ll get it done.
    I know those beaded shirts will take off. It’s a creative idea and pretty popular at that time!
    By the way, you know how that “War is useless” drawing came about? Years ago, I saw this metal placemat that Dad and Mom would use to put the hot rice cooker on. Well it has those interesting converging heart designs which I thought were fantastic! So I put blue acrylic paint on it and just pressed it on the paper, much like a stamp! I give artistic credit to whoever did that placemat design– some people are just positively creative!
    Take care always there, Lynchie!

  3. I just need to make a correction, Lynchie. It was actually ate Lou’s placemat that was the source for my drawing. Sorry for the mix-up. My bad.
