Francis Magalona (October 4, 1964 – March 6, 2009)

This post pays respect to the late Francis Magalona, artist, who passed away on March 6, 2009, of leukemia. He was only 44 years old.
Philippine music would never have grown to what it is now without his pioneering effort in introducing rap– largely an African-American art form– to Filipino culture. I will forever remember him as the man who wrote the most important Filipino rap ever: “Mga Kababayan Ko” (My Fellow Countrymen). That song, which came from his 1990 monumental album, Yo!, was a staggering work of genius! It is a patriotic song anchored on the three most important virtues of everyday life: God, family, country. Back then, I didn’t know anyone who didn’t know that song! It was really that remarkable– and unforgettable!
Francis Magalona was not only a musical legend, but a very good visual artist as well! I remember seeing his paintings in the 90s and I thought he was really very talented! I admired him all the more for that!
He will surely be missed! My prayers and sincerest condolences go out to his family!
May he rest in peace. GOD Bless his soul!

  7. I have taken my family last night March 6, 2009 at the 1st night of Kiko’s wake. I am sure that there would be a bigger crowd today. We were there and we saw Pia and her kids and quite a few friends. Amidst this, I know that they will remain to be in good hands though. Francis Magalona left them not just a legacy but a support base as huge as the entire nation.

I saw THE FREE MAN himself and somehow I know he passed away happy. I saw it in his face. He must have gotten thin and quite darker but one can still see a FIGHTER in his face. I have had several encounter with him in the past through his gigs and some mall tours which I have seen in an impromptu instance.

Amidst all, last night was the first time I had the chance to get so close to him like almost touching him. Unfortunately, he has left already and I cannot even tell him how thankful I am for all his contributions to us as youth then.

I do hope that somehow all his life’s works and achievements will be continued. At the very last, he never surrendered both in his illness and with his advocacy for unity. He will always be remembered. He may have died but he will always be alive in our hears, mind and in the books of this nation.

Thanks Francis Michael D. Magalona, Jr.!

  8. malaking kawalan talaga para sa ting lahat bilang mga pilipino ang pagpanaw nya. sobrang lungkot ko pa man din nung araw na yun. Tapos nakabasa ako may nag-joke pa-

“Bakit hindi na lang si Andrew E. muna”

ayun natawa naman ako dun. no offense sa lahat. wala naman sigurong masamang ibig sabihin yung nagjoke. pangulit lang, but just the same wala na tayong magagawa kundi tanggapin na lang at isipin na at least nasa mabuti na syang kalagayan ngayon at di na nahihirapan.

~ salamat pare…pati dun sa kanta..peyborit ko yun. na-appreciate ko ang concern mo.

  9. I am very lucky to have watched the MASTER RAPPER performed live before my very eyes two Decembers ago with my son…singing all the hits…with his untimely demise the entire generation of young people like us who in one way live and love the ideals conveyed by Francism will surely feel the vacuum…so let us continue to sing his songs and spread Filipino nationalism like what the Master Rapper conveyed in his music to his t-shirts lines.A genius worthy of emulating, a brave soul, a great father to his children and a good husband to his wife..A Filipino nationalist of the modern era …may your soul dear brother rest in peace and sing your heart out as one of the angels in heaven…and as THE GREAT FRANCIS M wrote and turned into a musical masterpiece…in fact my personal favorite..Every color and every hue is represented by me and you..take a slide in the slope, take a look in the kaleidoscope.. spinning around..make it twirl in this kaleidoscope world…Kiko we will be forever grateful for your musical influences making nationalism hip to our generation..long live Francism.

  10. we will miss you and your song

  12. He’s indeed a big loss to the music industry. As I watched the tribute given by Eat Bulaga, I’m surprised to know that he has touched so many lives.
